About Carly
I am a Canadian teacher who has the travel bug! I started teaching Science and Biology in French just outside of Toronto, Ontario & after four years teaching in my home country I decided to move abroad. I taught for four years in southern China, developing the Integrated Science, Biology & AP Sciences program while exploring South East Asia, scuba diving, and eating so many yummy noodles. I then chose to take a break from teaching and go to graduate school at York University where I completed a Masters of Environmental Studies with a focus on Environmental Education, specifically as it pertains to international school students. While I really enjoyed the research and writing process I was happy to dive back into the classroom in Caracas, Venezuela where I first taught the IB Biology & MYP Sciences while developing a fondness for arepas and the meringue. I am currently in my third year in Rabat, Morocco where I continue to teach IB Biology as well as Integrated Science, often with my dog Kooga by my side (especially during virtual school).

- My focus on inquiry and hands-on learning and science skills rather than straight memorization helps my students apply their knowledge to the world around them. It prepares them for both the IB diploma exams and university.

- Through hands-on investigations, data analysis & big ideas, I worked to help students in Grades 6-12 learn and apply Scientific knowledge and understanding for IB exam preparation and their investigations such as the IA, EE, and MYP Personal Project.

- In this 100% English Language Learner school, I worked hard to incorporate English language skills into every lesson, helping my students grow as budding scientists, preparing them for the AP exams, and assisting them in mastering English.

- As both a French Immersion and English Science teacher, I worked to teach the Grade 9 & Grade 10 Science curriculum, which includes Chemistry, Physics, Biology & Earth Science, with four units per semester. When students moved into Grade 11 & 12, all of the Science instruction was in English, so I used my language skills to support those students transitioning to English classes from french, all while continuing to build a solid knowledge & skill base in Science.

My methodology and approach to tutoring
What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that all students can learn and achieve great success and that success means something different for everyone. My goal is to support my students and guide them as they learn and apply new knowledge and skills.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would start by asking the student to discuss their goals for the course or task we are working on, whether preparing for the IB Biology exam or working on their Extended Essay. Then I would discuss their learning style and progress to date in the course &/or on the task. Ideally, I would have access to a recent work sample from the student, or I would ask them some questions to determine their needs. I would then share my ideas and strategies and work with the student to develop a plan that works for them.
